As part of the Re-evaluate project, Fibre Mood was given
the opportunity to translate a historical piece from the
Momu Antwerp study collection into a contemporary and
accessible pattern that radiates the spirit and look of the
original.
At the end of the 1920s, fashion underwent a radical
change, and this sequinned dress marks that turning
point. The discovery of Tutankhamun in 1922 sparked a
fascination with Egyptian motifs and shiny ornaments,
while Art Deco dominated Europe. During the same
period, women were moving more freely than ever before:
after years of labour during the war, they demanded
clothing that reflected their new rhythm of life.
This dress translates that mentality into material and cut.
The straight, bias-cut silhouette allows the body to move
without stiffening, the asymmetrical hem breaks with
traditional floor-length evening wear, and the striking
zigzag motif references both Egyptian imagery and the
modern design of the 1920s. The result is a garment that
only takes shape when in motion.
This historical combination of functionality and visual
impact is once again a source of inspiration today. The
modern version of this dress, MILDRED, builds on the
same principle: freedom in the cut, rhythm in the lines
and a subtle sparkle that connects eras.
Fabric Advice
For this sleeveless, lined dress, it's best to choose a fabric that drapes well. Think of satin, crepe, viscose twill or soft wool fabrics for an elegant look. Could it be a bit more festive? Then opt for sequin fabric, jacquard or a subtle metallic weave.
Combine with a light, smooth lining, such as viscose, acetate or cupro, so that the dress glides comfortably over the body and offers extra comfort.
